My daughter is trying out for the high school volleyball team and this week is conditioning.
A couple of the girls, of all races, were standing around talking what the girls called ghetto.
The coach, “I don’t care how you talk at home or school, here we talk like the intelligent young ladies we are.”
I love a coach who expects more from his players than simply the ability to spike a ball.

My daughter has been on the JV dance team at her high school for 3 years. She did not make varsity so she decided not to dance for her senior year. The coaches she had were like that too. They were also expected to say yes mam and no mam to all teachers and parents. I was never concerned about any misbehavior with that group and it took a load off my mind. I am glad you have a good coach. Keep us posted if she makes it or not.

Oh wait, that was a knock on the coach…to be fair the story was relayed by my 14 year old and I quoted him based on what she told me, so take that for what it’s worth.
Usually it’s me. I type fast, I edit fast and then I spend the next 2 days fixing what I notice I didn’t catch the first seven times I read my post:)

I get a hoot out of people who interview for jobs using that type of speech. It’s good that somebody is teaching them to comport themselves well.
I am all for being comfortable and using language in unique and fun ways. Kids are the best linguists. Testing and playing with language to find more efficient ways for the brain to work, but as you say, there is a difference between that and speaking in a professional clear manner that represents ones ability to think and express themselves, so others can understand. I think parents, teachers and coaches need to model and encourage the more “formal”way of speaking. Kids are gonna do the kid thing on their own…lol
